Saw these horses in a
field near Seacroft
whilst driving around
the Leeds Ring Road one
evening, the horses
where jumping around and
general being quite
spectacular but I didn't
have my camera with me.
I returned the next
night to find the horses
in a much more subdued
mood, my hope of getting
a great action shot
scuppered. The horse in
the foreground wandered
over for a nosy but lost
interest in me pretty
quickly, the saving
grace was that the sky
was becoming quite
spectacular as the
evening drew in.
I didn't manage to
get a good one of the
horse and the sky in the
same shot but decided I
could cobble something
together with Photoshop.
Wasn't immediately sure
if I had anything
worthwhile but thought
the original shot above
had quite a melancholic
feel about it and I
wanted to see if I could
enhance this by
replacing the sky and
enhancing the contrast
in the foreground.
Firstly I added a
different sky as another
layer in Photoshop and
used Add Mask Layer to
merge the foreground
that I wanted from one
layer with the sky I
wanted from a second
layer. Then I used
Feathered Selections and
Adjustment Layers to
change the brightness of
the foreground and the
horse. Finally I used
Dodge and Burn to
enhance the texture of
the horses hair. I also
cloned sections of the
middle ground to remove
a couple of horses that
I didn't want in my
image. I also used the
Transform tool to bring
the foreground forward
by skewing the bottom of
the image out.
